Other 2008 National Main Street Cities include: Amarillo, Beaumont, Beeville , Bowie, Bridgeport, Canton, Canyon, Carthage, Celina, Clifton, Colorado City, Comanche, Corsicana, Cotulla, Denison, Denton, Electra, Elgin, Fairfield, Farmersville, Freeport, Georgetown, Goliad, Gonzales, Grand Saline, Greenville, Harlingen, Henderson, Hillsboro, Huntsville, Kerrville, Kilgore, La Grange, Levelland, Livingston, Llano, Lufkin, Luling, Marshall, McKinney, Mineola, Mount Vernon, Nacogdoches, New Braunfels, Odessa, Paris, Pharr, Plainview, Rio Grande City, San Angelo, San Marcos, Seguin, Sonora, Spur, Taylor, Tyler, Waxahachie, and Winnsboro.
"A lot of hard work goes into achieving this recognition, which honors the many people, including Main Street managers and volunteers, who put in countless hours to make their Main Street programs work. The result is an active and successful downtown revitalization effort that benefits not only the Main Street district, but also the entire community," said Debra Farst, state coordinator of the Texas Main Street Program.
The cities were honored at the recent Texas Downtown Association/Texas Main Street Conference in Fort Worth. The National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center will honor these cities at the 2008 National Main Streets Conference to be held in Philadelphia in March.
Cities chosen as National Main Street Cities must show above average performance in 10 categories. The selection criteria focus on planning, staff and volunteers, preservation ethic, training and program assessment. For additional information, visit the National Main Street web site at
www.mainstreet.org and the National Trust for Historic Preservation web site at

The THC's Texas Main Street Program is a revitalization program for historic downtown and neighborhood commercial districts. It is based on a four-point approach organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring, all within the context of historic preservation. Implemented in 1981, the program has assisted more than 140 communities throughout the state.
For more information, contact Debra Farst at 512/463-5758.
The Texas Historical Commission is the state agency for historic preservation. The agency administers a variety of programs to preserve the archaeological, historical and cultural resources of Texas.
We need volunteers for all committees.
If you would like to serve your neighborhood association, please volunteer for a committee. Many neighborhood activities have funds available but, because of lack of volunteers to organize the event, are not happening. Those with small children may want to volunteer for the Easter egg hunt committee, or for the Santa drive through committee, etc. Others may want to volunteer for the welcoming committee or yard of the month committee.
Possible special activities include:
- Easter egg Hunt
- Before School picnic
- Welcoming committee
- Yard of the Month
- Christmas hayride
- Best Christmas decorations
If you have an interest in any of these activities, or would like to propose an activity not listed, please contact the board of directors or the management company. We want to make our community more attractive to YOU.
New La Porte ordinance: Sec. 14-9. Animal waste disposal
Sec. 14-9. Animal waste disposal
The owner and/or custodian of every animal shall be responsible for the sanitary disposal of, and shall dispose of, any excreta deposited by an animal under his or her control on all public property, including but not limited to, public walks, streets, recreation area and parks, and also upon all private property not within the control, possession or supervision of said owner or custodian.
The enforcement of this ordinance is provided by the La Porte Police Department. It is possible that the fines for this offense could be as much as $500.
Through their passage and approval by City Council, this ordinance is now in effect.
New La Porte ordinance: Sec. 70 -182. Presumed operator of parked vehicles
Sec. 70 -182. Presumed operator of parked vehicles
In a prosecution for an offense under Texas Transportation Code Chapter 545, Subchapter G, and relating to the stopping, standing and parking of unattended motor vehicles, it is presumed that the registered owner of the vehicle is the person who stopped, stood or parked the vehicle at the time and place the offense occurred.
The reasoning for this newly adopted ordinance is that in the process of issuing citations to the motor vehicle operators for parking violations, it is frequently the case that the vehicle itself is unattended and it is thereby impossible for the officer to locate the offender and personally issue the vehicle operator a citation to appear in court. In these situations the past practice of the City was to issue citations to "owner/operator" and to leave a copy of the citation attached to the vehicle. While this policy was legal it complicated efforts at prosecuting parking violators, particularly when a case was contested in court and the State has to proffer evidence that a particular person, whether it be the registered owner or not, was actually culpable. The enforcement of this ordinance is provided by the La Porte Police Department. Fines for these types of offenses can range from $130 to $490 depending on the specific offense.
Through their passage and approval by City Council, this ordinance is now in effect.
